Title: M321, Electromagnetism
Institution: Murdoch University, Australia

Level:

Degree, postgraduate, diploma.

Description:
The electromagnetic spectrum extends from low frequency radio waves through to very high energy gamma rays of cosmic origin, with frequencies spanning 22 orders of magnitude. Remarkably, Maxwell's equations set no limit on frequency and can be used to describe phenomena related to any part of this spectrum.

Hence, after a brief review of vibrations, waves, physical optics and the origin of Maxwell's equations this course will address topics including relativistic kinematics and covariant form of Maxwell's equations; propagation of EM waves in vacuum and dielectric media, Fresnel's equations; radiation, interaction of quantum systems with radiation, lasers; RF, microwaves, waves through plasmas and the ionosphere; superconductivity; optoelectronics, optical fibres, non-linear effects.

Applications of these topics in areas such as astronomy, y-ray and infrared telescopes, communications and optical computers will be discussed.

Assessment is by assignments, laboratory report and final examination.
Prerequisites: M151 Physics for Science and Engineering, M211 Quantum Theory. M221 Electronics is recommended.
